your real name?

Category: Let's talk

Post 1 by sugarbaby (The voice of reason) on Thursday, 19-May-2005 8:48:35

earlier I was present during a conversation where a user asked for her real name not to be revealed. actually I'm not sure if it was a her as her profile didn't tell me, but .. well we'll say her for now. So when I asked who she was hiding from, she said she didn't want anyone to know her real name for safety purposes, so ... are you paranoid about who you tell your name to? after all, a name is just a name isn't it? does it really matter who knows?

Post 2 by charisma (Here today, gone tomorrow.) on Thursday, 19-May-2005 8:54:46

Nope, I could care less who knows my name smile.
it's Lisa, Ann, Hudson. Go ahead and look me up. If i get some strange call, or some stranger at my door who's stocking me, i'll just call 911, and it would suck for you! Shouldn't go around stocking people lol.
I do appriciate however, people who use caution, as this sort of thing does happen, but as for me, I have other things to worry about.+

Post 3 by Puggle (I love my life!) on Thursday, 19-May-2005 8:57:23

I don't mind people knowing my name, after all, thoughs who I meet in every day life will learn my name apon first beeing introduced. so why should on line be any different? Maybe the invent of usernames and handles on line has made people unjustly paranoied. who knows.

Post 4 by Ukulele<3 (Try me... You know you want to.) on Thursday, 19-May-2005 9:01:43

Nope. I don't care who knows my real name. Puggle has a very good point on there being no difference between face to face meetings and online meetings. So here is to everyone!!! My name is Michelle Yang!!!

Post 5 by Twinklestar09 (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Thursday, 19-May-2005 10:07:50

As you know, I don't mind sharing my real name, but it's my middel name. I rarely ever give out my last name and don't have any reason to tell my first since I rarely go by that anyway normally. If I've been chatting with the person for awhile, feel comfortable about it, and they're curious and don't mind sharing their full name either, then I don't mind, but generally I won't. I guess the reason is that even though most people would not take the time or think of looking your information up, it can still be possible. So I wouldn't even want to take a chance on that at all. It's not that I see all people as bad, as I've made many friends off the Net who I really like chatting with, but to me, all they really need to know as far as my name, is what I go by and of course, I'm honest about everything I tell people, so yeah. *smiles*

Post 6 by krisme (Ancient Zoner) on Thursday, 19-May-2005 10:20:38

I don't mind people knowing my first name, but I don't reveal my last name. I guess just for safety. I don't think some carzy person is going to come stalk me or anything, but even so, my first name is usually all i tell people. Plus a lot of people know who I am in real life anyway, at least on here. Btw, my first name is Kerri, and the K and R in my username are my initials.

Post 7 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Thursday, 19-May-2005 11:47:01

i don't really like giving out persinal information and i hate it when somebody else decides to give it out.

James Dietz. Pleased to meet youz I'd be surprised if people wanted to find me but I know they might be able to ... someone here was able to do it on skype with me, but I didn't coach them or anything. But I share the name with a famous WW2 artist or something, so yeah. BUt people must think they're pretty hot stuff if they think they are going to get stalked if they give away their full name... most of us aren't that important.

I don't usually give out my last name unless people need it for their address books or something, and if I trust the person. My name is Melissa (AKA Mel.)

Post 13 by Grace (I've now got the ggold prolific poster award! wahoo! well done to me!) on Thursday, 19-May-2005 20:22:55

let me think, I have been answering so long to the name "eejit" and though at times it has been/is at times a good description, yet still my name is Connie Grace. Grace is my middle name and my mother's first name. I also prefer not to share my last name. Just call me Connie ....or eejit
.................................................................. this here eejit of a person, me, was so happy to hear that the one calling her this had survived through that attempt of personal life taking that she had heard about that she didn't know how to respond as it was basically the first talking in a month from that end of August 2004 to the end of Sept. 2004. I think it is only of late that I am personally coming out of the shock of that news to my system. ............................. To Harp, Yes, maybe I should have gone on meds.in response to your question of me, but its not easy hearing that someone you care about may no longer be alive. I know I am not responding under the "correct" Posting but seems to me that Post of rdfreaks has gone on long enough and given that you and SB know each other then I trust this won't be a problem. Just being a bit real here. Connie

Post 14 by renegade rocker (I just keep on posting!) on Thursday, 19-May-2005 23:38:27

I couldn't care less! Byron is my real name, I mean it's common knowledge thanks to those whom I know anyway, so it's all good and well!

I don't mind sharing my first name and have given it to people whom I have exchanged quicknotes or private messages with on here. In fact, this is the only site where I have used a user name rather than just my first name. So my name is Becky.

Post 19 by rdfreak (THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE-BLUE KANGA-KICKIN AUSIE) on Friday, 20-May-2005 7:21:30

SB I have a friend like that! I still don't know her sir name, even though we've met face to face before and we chat only on msn. it's just that I keep forgetting to ask her sir name on the few occasions we've seen each other in person.
I don't really care if I give my name out. it's only a name, as you say. I just wanna be on the safe side with my sir name though so I only have "Rachel K" for my display name. I am very careful though in my online journal of writing people's names. even though a lot do it and they are only names, I some how feel it's not my place too. In public entries I would usually use initials though on the odd occasion lately I haven't done so as much. as, I'm thinking it is a name, could be anyone's name.
Interesting! However,
Rachel Dianne Keyte; come get me! :)

Post 20 by Inesle1987 (Account disabled) on Friday, 20-May-2005 7:59:31

Well, for those who don'T know: my surname is Mayer. This is a name you find very often in Germany, and, I hate it, but I don'T mind sharing it. I don'T understand why someone would keep their name as a secret.

Post 21 by Goblin (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Friday, 20-May-2005 8:59:13

I am very fond of my name its been handed down through every male in my family and strangely, Alistair my brother's name, means Alexander in Gaelic...so we have fun explaining that 1 as people get very confused...cant imagine why...

Post 23 by Susanne (move over school!) on Friday, 20-May-2005 13:54:16

Ines, that's funny, my maiden name was Meyer. It's also very common in Switzerland, and I wasn't particularly fond either :-). My first name, surprise, surprise, is Susanne.

Post 24 by Inesle1987 (Account disabled) on Friday, 20-May-2005 14:15:20

Lol. Well the "le" at the end of my username is typical for the part of Germany where I live. It's like "little". So you could translate my username "little Ines 1987".

Post 25 by Susanne (move over school!) on Friday, 20-May-2005 14:26:49

Hm, in Switzerland it would be -li instead of -le. And I didn't realize that you can attach the diminuitive to first names. Actually, come to think of it, I guess I did.

Post 26 by suzy (Veteran Zoner) on Saturday, 21-May-2005 16:26:02

Those of you who have chatted to me on the zone will know that my real name is Suzy. I did'nt see the point in using a user name although i can see why people would use them for safty or because they don't like there real name but i prefere to use my real name Suzy as it feels like people are talking to me personally then and i just preferr that.

Heh don't care. When I first came onto the online community, I didn't have any reason or knowledge to not share my name. So even if I don't use my name for logins there are a lot of people who know my first name. And if you don't know, it's Nehemiah. Also I'm on a lot of mailing / discussion groups, so my first and last name (which is Hall for the record) goes out just about every day. So it'd be pretty pointless to hide who I was.

Post 28 by sugar (Entertain me. I dare you.) on Sunday, 22-May-2005 6:07:34

Couldn't give a damn, Everyone knows my name is Danielle. It's in my profile. I don't give out my last name unless someone wants to know. Not coz I care, but, I don't get introduced to people in the street with my last name, so what's the point. If someone wants to know, they have a tongue in their heads don't they? Hi Daryn, I don't know if you remember me or not. We use to talk on msn messenger sometimes, but now I can't use msn messenger, because I'm using windows 98, and version 6.2 won't work well with jaws unless you use windows xp, and since it kicks you out when you log in unless you upgrade to6.2, so right now, my msn messenger days are over. I didn't use it a lot anyway, because I'm not a good multitasker. Anyway, in keeping with the topic, I'm a total believer in anonymity. so if a name is just a name, what does it matter if it's just a screen name? I don't care if people use their real names, screen names, or whatever. My apologies to sugar baby for getting slightly offf the topic, just had to say hi to Lord loldemort.

Name time! Most of you probably know me as, or have heard me refered to as, John L. The L, in case you're wondering, stands for Lipsey. The D, my middle initial which accompanies all my e-mail messages, is for Dean. Dean is my grandfather's name. Go ahead and google me if you wish... there are a few people who share my name. I don't think I'm related to them though.
As far as other info goes, if I've known you for several weeks, and we've chatted frequently in that time period, I'll probably give out my cell number... everyone and their dog can have my cell number. I have voicemail... you leave a message, and I call back those I want to talk to. :) Evil I know.

I don't give out my sirname because it's Greek and therefore unusual and therefore it will be easy to find me. my dad was half Greek you see.

I also don't give out my address or mobile phone number unless I trust a person and my landline is x directory.
